I have the same problems and do not have the new drivers. a temporary solution would be to use Cairo-Dock instead. I have attached a screenshot of mine. some people like it a lot more then avant and it is considerably more configurable. It does not suffer from the issues with artifacts like awn does and works fine with without the new drivers for nvidia. You can add the repository to your /etc/apt/sources.list with this code:
