I have the same problem on a lenovo r61. Sound worked on ubuntu 8.04 and is working if I boot the 8.10 install cd. Now with 2.6.27 kernel on my laptop and there is no sound output. Drivers are loaded and the devices are all recognized. I've tried different volumne tools and all levels are maxed.
