I keep seeing this problem --- it regularly (> 50% of the time?) stops
me from being able to suspend. Even more annoying, the log-out menu
sometimes pops up several minutes after requesting it: by this time if
I've decided to leave it unsuspended and left the room, the 60 sec
timeout will turn the machine off!

Incidentally, I've found that killing gnome-power-manager and manually
restarting it from the command line tends to solve the problem: not
ideal but at least it makes it possible to suspend when it's really
needed.
