Public bug reported:

Hi,

I juste installed Ubuntu 8.10 64bits on a 64bits PC equiped with nVidia
GeForce 6800 Ultra video card.

The desktop effects did not work, so I go to System/Administration/Restricted
drivers where three version were proposed :
- 96
- 173
- 177 (recommanded)

When I selected 177 and clicked "activate", nothing happened...

I go to synaptic and installed all the updates, and selected nvidia-
glx-177. Everything installed and I rebooted.

When ubuntu tried to load XServer, only a black screen remains.
Impossible to do CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE or CTRL+ALT+F1. Only ALT+SysRq+S E I
U B allows me to properly reboot.

After booting in recovery mode, I tried to reconfigure X : dpkg-
reconfigure xserver-xorg. Only questions about my keyboard were asked to
me and the problem remains.

I tried to install the 173 driver, through the restricted drivers. I
installed, but after, same result.

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
