Actually, I was able to find an acceptable workaround -- I set the Power Manager (runs in the systray by default, at least in Kubuntu) to hibernate whenever the lid is closed; this seems to work nicely. When I re-open, I need to wait a little for the system to wake up, but I'm not forced to close anything.
