Hello
I am back with an update:
After upgrading to 8.10 Intrepid I can confirm I still have this issue, the
upgrade and switch to KDE4 in this aspect had absolutely no effect.

The problems only affect my workstation with AMD64X2 processor, ASUS-
M2N-SLI mptherboard and the Nvidia Nforce 590 Chipset. I also own a
laptop (Intel based Toshiba) where I don't have this problem, so I
suspect there may be some architecture-dependent error triggering
involved.

All I need to do to trigger a system freeze on my desktop workstation is to go
into Konqueror settings>cache>enable cache, and the machine grinds to a halt in
about 10 seconds. A hardware reset button reboot is the only way I can get
control of the machine again (well actually maybe some fancy escape key
combinations on the keyboard could but I doubt it).
Bug CONFIRMED IN INTREPID.
