I am running a system that started as 7.something, then was upgraded to 8.04, then was upgraded to the release version of 8.10, and the problem did occur. The workaround at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=977224 comment 5 worked for me. A fresh install of 8.10 works fine too. The problem is that the bad /etc/network/interfaces file arrived from a previous install of Ubuntu. Many people will upgrade into using network manager, so in addition to making sure that you don't put a bad /etc/network/interfaces file out there, there is also value in being able to recover from having a bad one. Even if it's impractical to recover, having the UI vanish is a bad error message.
Here's the broken /etc/network/interfaces. Except for the censored SSID, it is an accurate description of my network environment. auto lo iface lo inet loopback iface eth1 inet dhcp wireless-essid Censored auto eth1 -- nm-applet won't launch https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/288528 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
