On Hardy there is no problem, there the file is a png as indicated by the 
following command on a terminal:
$ file /usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png 
/usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png: PNG image data, 1600 x 1200, 
8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced

Can somebody confirm if this is a problem on Intrepid?
