Lets see if we can troubleshoot udev. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingUdev seems to be outdated for Intrepid. I think you should be able to * sudo pkill udevd and start it with debugging * sudo udevd --debug-trace --debug (and then attach your camera...) and attach any output you get.
