This happens to me in Xubuntu 8.10, all updates installed. I open System>Shared Folders and the Shared Folders app think I need to install SMB and NFS, I opt to install it, it then 'installs it' and keeps asking to install them. Yes it could be because you need to be root to do so. I click Close to close the dialog box asking to install NFS/SMB and I'm able to add a share. Not sure if SMB/NFS are installed but it doesn't ask anymore to install them even after closing the app and reopening.
