Thanks for your response, Bryce. I'm attaching the files you requested, and a few more. This morning, before attaching the xorg.conf file, I checked to see whether it was the failsafe or my edited version. It turned out the latter, but with a line added to the mod module after loading glx, which for some reason unloaded dri2 I think (whatever that is). So I recompiled (?) the module without that line and got the failsafe again. I'm not sending you the failsafe, which you presumably well know, but instead my attempted modifications which failed (xorg.conf.1114......). I've also attached 3 log files: the current one (which seems to be searching for something to do with VESA) and two from yesterday, where I tried to make a couple of xorg.conf modifications having to do with the monitor's vertical refresh rate. The xorg.99 log file can't seem to find the right driver, listing a number of GeForce cards, and the xorg.1113 log file seems to find the nvidia driver but not screen.
I am using an Olevia/Syntax 337 hd-ready tv as monitor, but the manual doesn't list refresh rates, nor can I find them online (the model's been superceded and the discussion board mainly discusses hooking up xboxes). It's currently attached to the MOBO with an hdmi raather than vga cable. Again, I don't know whether that makes any difference.in Ubuntu--it works fine in Vista). Also, I don't know whether you want me to take this hard drive to Philly tomorrow to generate similar log files where the monitor is a high-res Dell CRT (1600x1200 I think) and the video is running off a GE Force 5200 AGP card. I tried that last week, and while I get the high res under that current system (Hardy), disconnecting that drive and substituting this Intreprid drive with the NVidia 177 drivers that are supposed to work for the 5200 generated the same low res and error messages as with the normal Olevia/dual boot setup. Thanks again for your help.
