I have the same problem with a Dell 640m (945GM chipset)! After the some press of FN-F8, the laptop completly freeze (music freeze, and I can't ssh in).
BTW, I don't know if it is related but I've got the same type of freeze running dumpreg (part of i855crt), a small program that try to dump the VBIOS to a file.
