Was it a fresh install or an upgrade via the update manager ? Anyhow, I had the same problem and it was that upgrading had set the PCM volume to 0
ALSO, the alsamixer had changed in the upgrade, so the simple "alsamixer" command did NOT show the PCM volume. The new alsamixer had to be run like this "alsamixer -Dhw" in order tho show all the volumes.
