I've md5sum checked the CD and run memtest - both fine.

Both x86 and amd64 versions of Ubuntu 8.04.1 desktop install fine.

But trying to install amd64 Ubuntu 8.10 alternate gives a kernel panic
early in the process. Running "Check CD for defects" on that machine
also produces a panic and sets the Caps Lock and Scroll Lock LEDs
flashing.

I've upgraded my m/board BIOS to the latest 0103, slowed the memory
timing, removed my PCI LAN card, disabled the onboard LAN... no change.

Given that amd64 8.04.1 was fine (on this hardware), should this be
classed as a new bug rather than tacked on here?

I'm seeing two different screens when it crashes... first one is
attached here.
