I can confirm exactly this on my system as follows, the commonality seems to be the graphics driver and card.
This happened after a post Intrepid (stable) install update to my system, which is running Kubuntu 8.10 / KDE 4.1.3, the base install of Intrepid did not have this problem (Maybe the Nvidia binary driver update was bad ?) The symptoms are: * slow shutdown (seems to stop at the 90% mark according to the progress bar) * screen then goes blank * coloured vertical lines appear from the top right of the screen growing to the left of the screen * the screen eventually becomes flat white * system needs to be powered down with the power button depressed as it doesn't shut down automatically (or I don't want to get screen damage) * screen is garbled on selecting a logout option from KDE4, then proceeds to the Kubuntu splash shutdown. At this point I am suspending my laptop only to try and avoid any boot corruption from a hard reset. >From what I can gather via Google it is being reported across multiple >systems: http://www.google.com.au/search?q=nvidia+colored+vertical+lines&ie=UTF-8 System: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9300 @ 2.50GHz Dell XPS M1330 NVIDIA Geforce 8400M GS Nvidia binary driver (via ubuntu repos) 1280x800 laptop display, 1680x1050 DFP second display via HDMI (unplugging the second screen doesn't alter symptoms) $ cat /etc/usplash.conf # Usplash configuration file # These parameters will only apply after running update-initramfs. xres=1280 yres=800 $ uname -a Linux riba 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Tue Nov 4 19:33:20 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux Output of lspci -vvnn attached $ aptitude show nvidia-glx-177 Package: nvidia-glx-177 New: yes State: installed Automatically installed: no Version: 177.80-0ubuntu2 $ aptitude show usplash Package: usplash State: installed Automatically installed: no Version: 0.5.25 $ aptitude show xorg Package: xorg State: installed Automatically installed: no Version: 1:7.4~5ubuntu3 I'll see if I can gather some logs and photos of the shutdown progress. ** Attachment added: "output of lspci -vvnn" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/19604457/lspci-vvnn.txt -- Weird Graphics Artifacts during reset after Partial Update https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/286928 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
