@dashua: thanks for the hint. I built and installed uvcvideo as per your script and now my webcam (an OmniVision Technologies running over USB in a Dell XPS M1530) works in cheese up to its max resolution of 1600x1200 (the refresh is a bit slow, but hey, it works!). It also works in skype.
