ja the shutdown thing is sorted, so in terms of the sounds as I said above installing kubuntu on top of gnome seemed to sort that out - how I have no idea. Not exactly a fix and quite a drastic work around. But if this is really irritating you I would suggest trying that. Cheers, Joe ps haven't tried unistalling kubuntu - kind of like having both around
