In Jaunty, it FTBFS also, and libtool is version 2.2.4-0ubuntu4 (http://launchpadlibrarian.net/19413734/buildlog_ubuntu- jaunty-i386.gdal_1.5.2-3_FAILEDTOBUILD.txt.gz).
