Thank you for taking the time to file this bug and help to improve
Ubuntu.

If update-grub is changing the UUID value specified for your root
partition on every run, then you have an incorrect 'kopt' setting in
menu.lst.  You should update this to list the correct UUID value.

If you are running Ubuntu 8.04 with grub 0.97-29ubuntu21, then update-
grub also posts a warning on each kernel update notifying you of this
difference; the UUID is only being clobbered if you choose the non-
default, "use the maintainer's version" option to overwrite menu.lst.
