I didn't want to completely remove the gui splash screen so I followed the procedure outlined here (http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-change- the-bootsplash-in-ubuntu-810-intrepid-ibex.html) with one exception. I did not use the purge option when removing usplash. Doing so asked me if I wanted to remove ubuntu-desktop and I didn't think that would be a good thing, so I just left the purge option off.
