ok, so after further investigation. it turns out that if you install libvisual-plugins after you install the gstreamer libvisual plugin (comes installed by default?) that gstreamer doesn't pickup on the plugins. i ended up forcing gstreamer to regenerate lots of info by running "rm ~/.gstreamer-0.10/registry*"
