I no longer have a /mnt/mdk partition, I'm afraid, so I can't check the exact same situation that was causing the problem before.
I did try a similar directory though, following a symlink, and that worked fine with xscreensaver 4.24-4 in debian sid, which isn't what you asked for, but it's the closest I can get at the moment, sorry.
