I have this issue too with a lenovo 3000 n200 notebook, Brazilian version. Don't remember the laptop number, I'm not on it right now. It occurred with both 8.04 and 8.10 with me. When testing i fixed it installing lilo, and then when booting with it my driver worked, but i really didn't like this fix.
