I have the same problem in ubuntu intrepid. Green scrambled test image. Trying to preload vl4compat gives error message:
$ LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored. With camorama camera works fine with pre loading.
