Hi guys, I have the same problem since yesterday.
I am not sure if this is due to a hard drive failure or a kernel upgrade (I am
using
2.6.24-19-generic on a Ubuntu 8.04).

The messages I get in /var/log/messages are :

The computer crashes sometimes, but not always. Plus the hard disk makes a
louder and higher-pitched scratching noise than usual.
lspci gives this output for the SATA controler :
SATA controller: Intel Corporation 82801HBM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) SATA AHCI
Controller (rev 03)

If you have any updates, i'm all ears.
Michael
