Thanks for looking into this.

The output of the cat is :-
Ununtu 2.6.27.7.16-generic

I still have the problem that if I remove acpi=off from the boot parameters
the system reboots during boot up. (pretty soon after it starts to boot
whilst the screen is black)

There is no visible panic it just reboots, ergo nothing to take a picture
of. sorry.

Put in acpi=off and it boots fine but any attempt to do thing that change
power states (plug/unplug PSU from laptop, use special function keys to
change screen brightness) causes an immediate reboot.

It doesn't shut down in an orderly way, it immediately reboots and you get
the manufacturers post screen.

You can get the same effect by running a laptop without a battery and
turning the power off then back on again.

As it does this so suddenly and is a full reboot there is nothing in the
logs that could help.

PS I can confirm that windows XP and Vista both work fine.
