- the current selection doesn't contain any 2D screen savers; on hardware,

- - include 2D screen savers (and mark them as not CPU intensive)
- - run screen saver nice'd, so it doesn't influence power management
+ gnome-screensaver may randomly select an OpenGL screensaver, even if
+ hardware acceleration for OpenGL is unavailable.  When that is the case,
+ it results in extremely poor performance and high CPU utilization
+ inappropriate for a screensaver.
