Thank you, but unfortunately bug report 292523 contains nothing useful to help me fix the problem. gvfs does not mount my drive, not does smbclient although I can at least see a directory with it. Since our office relies on the ability to actually open files on the central server, it looks like I'm stuck with Windows until either the next update or reformatting and going back to 8.04 which I'm not inclined to do.
