Surprise. This time everything was mounted ok after the restart. 
Unfortunately I didn't make good notes what I had done after I noticed the 
initial problem nor can I tell for sure how the boot sequence was different 
this time. But the candidates are:

1. It may be that I had changed the owner of the mountpoints from root to a 
user. Maybe the owner impacts the mounting behaviour.
2. It may be that just before the system start where I had had the mount 
problem I had used the USB as a boot device. Maybe my PC hardware has a HW 
fault that leaves the USB in an unnormal state in system restart.

I will tell more if the problem reappears. Anyway, see the gvfs-mount
-li output below.
