I am using Intrepid Ibex i386 installed since beta and fully updated. Hardware is eeePC 900. I can confirm this bug.
Pressing the mute/unmute hotkey (Fn+F7) toggles the master channel mute. However, this does not affect the sound from the laptop speakers at all. Sound muting only affected by toggling the the PCM channel mute/unmute.
