** Description changed:

  I am using Ubuntu 8.04 , Gnome 2.22.3 , Nautilus 2.22.5.1 .
I have the normal repos selected ( IE no backports etc ). This is pretty much
a vanilla install.

This happens under any circumstances. I have duplicated it every time I
tried ( after originally finding it )

   - I created a archive on the desktop ( though I am sure this can be
duplicated using other files )
   - I open Nautilus ( its window sits ~ middle of the screen )
   - I drag the archive from its top left corner position of the desktop from
left to right through Nautilus
   - If my mouse goes over the "Places" area in the left window of Nautilus, my
entire X screen locks up. The only thing I can do at this point is
CTRL+ALT+Backspace to "reset" X. This kicks be back to the login screen, where
I can login again.

This part really doesn't matter I suppose since it wouldn't occur if the last
part didn't, and not sure if it is its own bug.
  - After logging back in, my background appears fine, but any file that was on
my desktop is not visable. I can still see the files though if I browse to the
directory manually through terminal or Nautilus

+ [UPDATE]
+
+ This actually works when dragging *any* file. I have tested now with
+ text files that are on the local system, etc.
