I'm not sure how to install a new kernel on Ubuntu, so I'm afraid I cannot provide you with more information in that regard. I will try and read up a bit on how that's done this weekend, but I suspect it won't be easy for a novice like me.
Unfortunately the command you gave only disabled the nm applet, but network manager still ticks away eating up all 3GB of RAM.
