In the meantime, I've found a workaround to keep the systray application
from launching. The launcher resides at /etc/xdg/autostart/hplip-
systray.desktop

Rather than deleting the file entirely, I just changed the permissions
to not allow reading:

sudo chmod 000 /etc/xdg/autostart/hplip-systray.desktop

I restarted KDE, and no more icon. I haven't tried printing to an HP
printer yet, but it looks to me like it just disabled the system tray
icon, not any other functionality. If anyone knows better, please speak
up.
