Another correction. Using ath5k only works sometimes. I'm not sure when and why, but it fails in some situations in a manner similar to ath_pci but with differetn error messages.
Also, i tried swapping mini-pci cards between my thinkpad x31 and my thinkpad x40, with very strange results. The x31 has an ipw2100 wireless card and runs intrepid also. It works fgine with the intel card, and also, in a very short test worked well with the atheros card. The x40 on the other hand, has had all kinfds of issues with the atheros card, and with the intel card failed to load firmware.
