Your locking issues could easily be a driver issue.
I'd retest for the locking issues in Intrepid final, and report a bug against
the graphics drivers (probably xserver-xorg-video-radeon) if the hard locks
still occur.
Marking fixed as the original krandrtray issue has been resolved.
