For my GeForce 4 420 Go 32MB I installed 96.43.09 from source following the tips in this bug report and they're working fine for me with GL and compiz (apart the well known rendering bug for KDE3 apps). Not yet tested on KDE4. Alberto, thank you for your prompt effort!!
