Public bug reported:

Ubuntu release.
Description: Ubuntu 8.10
Release: 8.10

I expected:
Reasonable audio sound.

What happened:
ALL audio is choppy with some sort of echo.

I have a Sound Blaster Live! Emu10k1 and an onboard sound that came with my
asus a8ne mobo. I am running Intrepid AMD64 with Athlon 3700. I have already
disabled my onboard in my BIOS because it is broken. I have the SB Live to
replace it.
After a fresh install I have terrible audio. Almost as if everything has an
echo and even after I stop playing an audio file it keeps playing. Words to
describe it are jagged and choppy.
So without waste of time I open up Volume Applet 2.24.1 by right clicking on
that little speaker.
Under device:
1: SB Live 5.1 (alsa mixer)
2: SigmaTel STAC9708,11 (OSS Mixer)
3: Playback: ALSA PCM on front:0 (ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback) via DMA
(Pulse Audio Mixer)
4: Capture: Monitor Source of ALSA PCM on front:0 (ADC Capture/Standard PCM
Playback) via DMA (Pulse Audio Mixer)
5: Capture: ALSA PCM on front:0 (ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback) via DMA
(PulseAudio Mixer)

After I muted everything and turned each on in combination I have found that my
volume is controlled by three sliders.
1st: Master in device 1 which the same as Master in device 3. Under playback.
2nd: PCM in device one. Under Playback.
3rd: Volume in device 2. Under Recording.

It's the third that worries me! Why is my volume controlled by something
in oss, under another name in the recording tab! This may have something
to do with my choppy sound.
