I'm experiencing the same problem with a sony vaio VGN-FW140E. I tried Hardy, Intrepid (alpha's, beta's, official release), fedora 9, and many intel drivers up to 2.4.2 and with many kernel's until 2.6.27. I really think this issue relates only to the xserver-xorg-video-intel/xf86-video-i810/etc driver. To go around this problem i use the vesa driver which i could get it working at max 1024x768 (on a 1600x900 screen :(() by modifing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. >From what i read while searching for solutions there are many others with >similar (recent) sony vaio models facing the same issues.
