The same problem was also reported (and the workaround that Zeratul used proposed) in this thread on ubuntuforums.org: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=1679043 I can also confirm this with all mp3-files (and videos encoded with an mp3-audio-stream, a lot of divx-encoded movies do this) on edgy amd64 and i386. I can also confirm the workaround of switching the audio codec family to ffmpeg. I first tried putting afm=libmad or afm=ffmpeg in /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf (like it was in dapper) but that strangely didn't affect the gui-version of mplayer. -David
