To me, this was a very noticeable change to the UI in 8.10. I prefer having the volume slider disappear when focus is lost. Changing volume is a one-time ordeal -- when the sound needs adjustment, I click the volume icon and change the volume to a more comfortable level. I'm done using the control until I decide it needs to be changed again.
