When I tested Intrepid Ibex, the bug was still there, and I still needed to put "blacklist video" in "/etc/modprobe.d/local". That workaround is OK for me, but the bug should still be fixed. Others will want to use their brightness controls (the workaround disables them).
The bug is clearly in the kernel. I've recently seen it (or some incarnation of it) in Mandrake 2009 and also in the Gparted live CD.
