A lot of what you said is over my head, however I can tell you that I get the shutdown splash screen with the "moving bar" that shows shut down progress. At about the one third point it hangs. I'm thinking I might re-install 8.10. I am dual booting XP home/sp3 & Ubuntu using Grub. Does not matter I its shutdown or restart.
