@SirLancelot: ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE=true in /etc/default/acpi-support seems to work, my load cycle counter doesn't increase any more.
CONTROL_HD_POWERMGMT=1 in /etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf was already set in Intrepid, but you should take a look. After setting these a restart is required to apply. Hope it helps.
