I've the same behavior here. Updating an 8.04 to 8.10. Update process has been running for a while. The terminal says "ldconfig deferred processing now taking place". I'm running compiz, from time to time the update window get greyed for a few seconds. The harddrive is working heavily since the update is in the cleanup stage. Mem used by the "intrepid" process is growing slowly.
