Hello everyone! I own a Compaq Presario CQ50-215NR and I have the exact
same problem! I managed to boot Hardy 32bit [with the extra boot option
generic.all_generic_ide=1] and then to get the wireless working(AR5007),
I had to install the latest madwifi driver version 0.10.5.6.

With Intrepid x64 [and Hardy x64], I tried all the boot options and
different combinations from
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions with no success. If only
there was a boot option we could disable the ath_pci module from loading
while booting from the LiveCD [brokenmodules=ath_pci didn't work]. I
should also mention that the BIOS on my machine is extremely
restrictive, with the only option I can change being pretty much the
boot order, so there is no way for me to disable the wireless card from
BIOS.

I haven't tried Intrepid 32bit, because the 64bit flavor is the one I
really want. With that being said, any help would be highly appreciated.
And Teej, you're not alone in this...
