I should add to what I wrote in the original bug report that I am using the 686 kernel, 2.6.15-25, but I had the problem with prior kernels in 6.06. For me, ctrl-alt-backspace does nothing. The only way to get my computer back, that I have found, is to login remotely, find the xorg process at 100% CPU, and kill it. I don't know whether sound works.
