Are you all absolutely sure it's 5.97-5.2ubuntu2 that breaks it and not
5.97-5.2ubuntu1?

5.97-5.2ubuntu1 contains a bad merge from Debian which would break the
initial population of /dev by /etc/init.d/udev which would break LOADS
of things (it did so on my system). This was fixed in 5.97-5.2ubuntu2
which is currently being synced to the mirrors. You can already find it
here (assuming you're on i386):
http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/c/coreutils/coreutils_5.97-5.2ubuntu2_i386.deb

Installing that package fixes it for me.
