Are you all absolutely sure it's 5.97-5.2ubuntu2 that breaks it and not 5.97-5.2ubuntu1?
5.97-5.2ubuntu1 contains a bad merge from Debian which would break the initial population of /dev by /etc/init.d/udev which would break LOADS of things (it did so on my system). This was fixed in 5.97-5.2ubuntu2 which is currently being synced to the mirrors. You can already find it here (assuming you're on i386): http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/c/coreutils/coreutils_5.97-5.2ubuntu2_i386.deb Installing that package fixes it for me. ** This bug is no longer flagged as a security issue -- coreutils_5.97-5.2ubuntu1_i386.deb have broken the X and network. https://launchpad.net/bugs/72917 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
