I don't believe this is a problem with your specific driver. There are similar sounding comments in 289003, but the translation funny, I'm not sure. I have this problem with video overlay overlapping everything too. 8.10 started as beta, now fully updated. Using FGLRX current on Radeon HD 3200. Looks to be a Totem issue, then.
