With GNOME it fails for me too, with KDE it works. I can't believe it
has something to do with a bug in the kernel or some driver, or does it?

On the GNOME pages are some comments about Ubuntu and the suspend
feature:

however, with libpam-foreground installed nothing changes. Well, it
should work somehow, it works perfectly with KDE, any new insights?
