I would also like to note that I've been experiencing the exact same behavior with Amarok since I upgraded to Intrepid yesterday. I didn't run Strace, but the crashing then eventually disappearing from the panel but still running in the background part happened. I also had to log off and log back on to get it to work again. Also, when I start Amarok or Rhythmbox soon after logging into my laptop, the sound will "hang" at times, like when a CD has scratches on it and the CD player ends up stuck playing the same fraction of a second repeatedly. That never happened in Hardy. When I have the time later in the day I'll try starting them from the shell and see if they give anymore details.
